Common Causes of Dental Cavities
Cavities occur for many reasons in both children and adults. Left untreated, cavities can affect the surface enamel and interior dentin of the teeth down to the jaw bone, resulting in the need for extensive dental treatment and even the loss of affected teeth.
The formation of a cavity occurs as the bacteria that form in plaque eats away at the surface of the tooth. The longer plaque and bacteria remain on the surface of teeth, the longer bacteria can erode the tooth's structure. Plaque is sticky and not easily rinsed away. This is why it is important to brush and floss as recommended by your dental care provider.
Plaques develop as food and beverage particles remain in the mouth and collect along the surface of the teeth and at the gum line. When the gums are affected, gum disease can occur, causing a receding of the gums that allows plaque to reach and destroy the tooth roots. Sugary foods and beverages such as soda, sports drinks, and fruit juices increase the risk of cavities by being corrosive to teeth as well.
You can have cavities and not even know it if they are small and in certain areas of the mouth, especially between teeth. This is why it is important to see our West Hollywood dentist at least twice a year for regular dental exams and cleanings to reduce your risk of cavities and treat them early before more extensive dental work is needed.
