Common Dental Problems for Adults

Common Dental Problems for Adults

Many people assume cavities are a problem most frequently encountered during childhood. However, adults may be susceptible not just to cavities but other dental health problems that may threaten their dental health and the function and aesthetics of their smiles. Our West Hollywood dentist encourages our patients to learn more about the most common dental problems facing adults today.

Gum Disease

It starts with red, swollen gums that may bleed when your teeth are brushed or flossed. Gum disease is best treated when caught early. If it is left untreated, gum, tooth and bone loss can occur as the infection spreads and deepens into the oral cavity. Gum disease is caused by the bacteria contained in plaque, which is why frequent brushing and good flossing habits are so critical to good dental health.

Stains

Although yellow, gray and brown stains may not be a threat to your dental health, they can be unsightly. You do have options, however. Teeth whitening treatments can restore your teeth to their original color and eliminate stains caused by cola, coffee, tea and nicotine. In-office and take-home whitening treatments can offer dramatic results.

Teeth Grinding

Stress, misalignments and TMJ disorders can increase your risk of teeth grinding. Although you may not be aware of this habit, your partner may notice it. Our dentist may also mention it at your dental checkups, particularly if there is evidence that your teeth are worn, cracking or otherwise damaged. You may need to wear a night guard or practice relaxation techniques that can alleviate the stress associated with teeth grinding.
