New Treatments for Gum Disease
Gum disease affects nearly half of all Americans over the age of 30 and more than two-thirds of those over the age of 65. Mild gum disease may involve slight bleeding and inflammation while more severe cases of gum disease can lead to tooth, bone and tissue loss. Dr. Afar, West Hollywood dentist, recommends that our patients seek routine dental exams that can help identify early signs of gum disease when the condition is at its most treatable.
Deep cleaning procedures have long been the first-line treatment against gum disease. A deep cleaning procedure is designed to remove any plaque and tartar buildup that could harbor gum disease-triggering bacteria, and smooth the roots of the teeth so that it is more difficult for the bacteria to re-adhere. Traditionally, gum disease treatments have also included antibiotic or antimicrobial treatments to combat the infections. More severe cases would be treated surgically. New treatments include bisphosphonates, a pharmacologic agent that is generally used in addition to the deep cleaning procedure.
Bisphosphonates are designed to stimulate bone regeneration in those who have suffered bone loss due to severe gum disease. This can eliminate the need for more invasive treatments, such as bone grafts and other surgical treatments. Bisphosphonates may be recommended for use along with antimicrobials and antibiotic treatments as well for better results.
Symptoms of gum disease can include red or inflamed gums, gums that bleed when brushed or flossed, receding gums, chronic bad breath or loose teeth. Any of these symptoms indicate a thorough dental exam is in order. Dr. Afar, West Hollywood periodontist, can provide you with information on regaining your gum health and a carefully tailored treatment plan that addresses your unique needs.
