Oral Care of Patients with Endocrine Disease

Oral Care of Patients with Endocrine Disease

When you visit our West Hollywood dentist for a dental exam or treatment, we may ask you for detailed information regarding your health, medications or allergies. Each patient has individual needs and concerns, and part of our job is to determine the best ways to help them achieve good dental health. For example, those with endocrine diseases, or conditions that affect the endocrine system, may need slightly different care in order to ensure their safety and well-being.

• Diabetes can bring with it numerous challenges, not the least of which is an increased risk of dental disease. Those with diabetes may be more prone to developing gum disease and suffering from dry mouth. Brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing carefully can help reduce the plaque and tartar that harbor the bacteria that cause gum disease and tooth decay. If you suffer from diabetes-related dry mouth, you may need to chew sugarless gum or suck on sugar-free candies in order to stimulate saliva flow. In some cases, an artificial saliva replacement product may be necessary.

• Addison’s disease can cause mouth sores or discolorations. Our dentist may recommend treatment with steroids before any treatment in order to help reduce the risk of complications.

• Thyroid disease

Hypo- and hyperthyroidism rarely need special treatments as long as they are under good control. If you have uncontrolled hyperthyroid disease, our dentist may need to adjust your anesthetic to ensure the safest results. Drug interactions or reactions may be more likely for those with uncontrolled hypothyroid disease.
