What is Tooth Abscess?
An abscessed tooth is a potentially serious infection that develops in or near the tooth’s root. It occurs when the pulp inside the tooth becomes inflamed and diseased. The nerve of the tooth eventually dies, and bacteria are allowed to breed unchecked. Most commonly, an abscessed tooth is diagnosed as a result of a severe toothache. The bone around the tooth may ache or throb, or you may experience pain while chewing. Some patients have a pimple or swollen spot on the gums near the roots of the tooth. Some patients also experience a foul-tasting discharge. These can be symptoms of other problems as well and should be evaluated as soon as possible.
If you experience any symptoms of an abscessed tooth, prompt treatment can help save the tooth. An abscess is usually treated with a root canal. During this procedure, our dentist will numb the tooth and remove the diseased tissues and bacteria. The canals of the tooth will be thoroughly cleaned, shaped and treated. Once the abscess and infection have been completely removed, the canals of the tooth are sealed with a special material, and the tooth will be permanently restored, usually at a later appointment.
Most abscessed teeth can be saved with prompt, proper treatment. Once a crown has been bonded to the tooth, it will be fully restored and will be as strong and functional as any other tooth. Call us to learn more or to schedule an appointment with our team.
