Smoking and Its Negative Effect on Dental Implants Treatment
Dental implants are one of the healthiest restoration options for those who have experienced tooth loss. They replace the root of the missing tooth, and the prosthetic can then be attached to the abutment on top for a permanent restoration that looks, feels and functions just like your own natural tooth. However, if you smoke, Dr. Afar, West Hollywood dentist, may recommend another tooth restoration option, such as a dental bridge, or advise you to quit smoking to ensure a healthier procedure.
In order for a dental implant procedure to be successful, the bone must heal around the implant, which requires a complex process known as osseointegration. Smoke contains about 4,000 different toxins that can delay or impede the healing process, and the nicotine itself reduces blood flow to the implant site. A study at Guarulhos University in Brazil focused on dental implants and smoking. Patients were separated into smokers and non-smokers. After micro-implants were placed, patients were examined. The smokers were more likely to have experienced compromised healing than the non-smokers.
The results led researchers to recommend dentists to use caution when performing implant procedures on those who smoked since the habit can significantly delay healing. If you smoke and are missing a tooth or several teeth, you may be eligible for dental bridges or dentures. You may also be a candidate for dental implants if you are able to quit smoking while your dental implants heal.
